Where in the World Have The Babes Been?? Part 2

The past few months have been incredibly busy for The Babes! Read on to see what they’ve been up to!

Sarah Ribble

Sarah at her first interview in NYC!

Sarah: Life has been crazy since graduation in May! I began working as a wedding consultant at David’s Bridal right after school was over. That was a fun and interesting job! Plus, I got to try on lots of pretty dresses. 🙂 The whole time I was working there though, I was constantly applying for fashion design jobs in New York. I had decided towards the end of the school year that I wanted to move to New York City with a couple of my best friends from school! Finally, in June I got an interview for an assistant designer position at a swimwear company in New York! The following week I came to the city to interview for the position and less than a week after that I had accepted it! I had very little time to get myself to NYC more permanently so I ended up staying with a family friend in New Jersey for several weeks. In July my two roommates, Shannon & Derek, and I moved into our new apartment in the Bronx! It’s huge and beautiful and I can’t wait to share it with you! Now, I’m finally getting settled into my new life in NYC and I couldn’t be happier! 🙂

Emily at the X-Ambassadors Concert!

Emily: My summer has turned out completely different then I thought it would but it’s been amazing! I started shooting for the Suicide Girls which is basically my dream job, and I’ve met some amazing people through it so far! I also recently started working as a jewelry apprentice at a major jewelry store’s repair shop. Throughout school I focused on trying to get a full time job working as an entry level fashion photographer or assistant in a larger studio but I decided to take this amazing job that gives me time and money to focus on my personal photography business on the side, while still doing something I love. I feel so welcomed by everyone I work with and I’m happy to be a part of such a fantastic team. I’ve been busy with a lot of other fun things this summer! I’ve been to a few concerts and have seen some of my favorite bands: X-Ambassadors, Matt & Kim, Glass Animals, and Bear Hands were all so amazing to see live! The next year is going to be insane with my goal of moving to the pacific northwest by next fall! Right now I’m embracing change and I’m so excited for whats to come!

Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to read at least one book per month in 2015. In order to help myself stick to that resolution I’ve decided to review the books I read and share my thoughts with you!

Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent

Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent

I received Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent as a Christmas gift and thought it would be the perfect book to start my resolution with. Mandy Aftel is an artisan perfumer who hand-blends and bottles all of her creations. She works with only the finest natural ingredients and crafts perfume with essences much like an artist creates a masterpiece with a brush. It is apparent in this book that Aftel is extremely passionate about her work. You can view and purchase her products here!

In Fragrant, Aftel details the history of scent by discussing five of its pillars; cinnamon, mint, frankincense, ambergris, and jasmine. Cinnamon speaks of the exotic. Mint reminds us of home. Frankincense elevates our senses. Ambergris is shrouded in mystery. Jasmine seduces us.

Each section of this book begins with a brief history of the scent in question and then digresses into a broader look at the history of scent itself. Each section ends with practical tips and instructions for creating your own perfumes, recipes for perfumes that feature each section’s specific scent, and even ways to incorporate each scent into your next meal.

I’ve always been fascinated by perfume and scent, so naturally, I loved this book! Aftel has a fun, passionate voice. It is clear in every sentence that she eats, sleeps, and breathes perfume (literally). Her book is full of fascinating tidbits. I found it especially interesting to learn about the mystery that shrouded some of these essences. Cinnamon, for example, was once believed to be harvested by giant mythical birds.

Fragrant is an incredibly interesting book and a fairly light read. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in fragrance or the history of scent. Whether you’re new to the subject (like myself) or a highly skilled perfumer, there’s something in this book for everyone!

Valentine’s Day Lingerie Roundup

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and The Babes can’t wait to buy some sexy lingerie! Most designers and brands come out with special collections for the holiday and The Babes rounded up some of their favorites to share with you! These irresistible options are available across three different price points.

Emily’s Pick

ASOS Lace Scuba Body $37.90

ASOS is a great place to find affordable lingerie. My favorite part is the fact that they carry a lot of larger sizes too. I love this body suit! The lace is so pretty and I love how there is a bra so it adds extra support and coverage when wearing it under your clothes.

Forever 21

Sarah’s Pick

Forever 21 Floral Mesh Balconette Bra & Lace-Trimmed Floral Boyshorts $13.80

Forever 21 has really improved their intimates range over the past year or so. This little mesh bra and panty set is super feminine and cute and a total steal at just $14 for the set!

Topshop Satin and Lace Bralette and High Waisted Knickers $62

Emily’s Pick

Topshop Satin and Lace Bralette and High Waisted Knickers $62

I’ve never personally bought anything from Topshop, but after browsing their website there are definitely some things I have my eyes on now. I’m a huge fan of bralettes and unlined bras. I wear them more than any other kind of bra. I love the mix of satin and lace in this strappy bra and high-waisted panty set.

Victoria’s Secret Chantilly Lace Merrywidow $88

Victoria’s Secret always has a wide selection of V-Day options, but this piece caught my eye this time around. The merrywidow is a flattering silhouette on most body types and I love the bold red color of this one. The sexy lace neckline is killer! This set isn’t for the faint of heart!

L'Agent by Agent Provocateur Vanessa Non Pad Demi Bra, Suspender, and Mini Brief

Emily’s Pick

L’Agent by Agent Provocateur Vanessa Non Pad Demi Bra, Suspender, & Mini Brief $208

I love the idea of doing purple for Valentine’s Day! It is something that isn’t done often, but it’s such a  fun color that translates really well for V-Day! The lace in this set is to die for! I love how romantic the scalloped edges and bows are.

Only Hearts Golden Key Set $132

I’m obsessed with this V-Day set from Only Hearts! This bralette is so romantic and the tassels are so playful. I have a weakness for tassels. I also love the contrast of the black lace and the nude mesh. This set is too precious to pass up!

Emily Goes to Wild Lights

Wild Lights at the Columbus Zoo

Wild Lights at the Columbus Zoo

My boyfriend and I have been talking about going to Wild Lights at the Columbus Zoo since we started dating and unfortunately we never found the time to go last year. This week we finally went! I had only been once before, a few years ago, but I have been wanting to go back since! It was extremely cold, but with all the layers I wore, the hot chocolate, and staying cuddled together, we managed to fight through the cold. I definitely enjoyed it!

Wild Lights is an event the Columbus Zoo does every year during the winter/holiday months. They keep the zoo open after dark and deck all the trees and structures out with beautiful strings of lights and decorations. It is kind of strange to go to the zoo when the majority of the animals are hibernating, but with the wintery atmosphere it was great seeing reindeer, bears, and penguins, which were all very amusing. My zoo favorites are always the cats and the reptiles!

The lights were beautiful as I expected! We only caught a few glimpses of the main light show in the center of the zoo, but it was completely stunning. There was beautiful holiday music coming from all around, and an overwhelming spectacle of lights moving and reflecting in the water that synchronized with the music. It was quite a sight to see!

It almost felt like we were in space, with all these tiny glimmering stars all around us!

I tried to get some photos of the cozy outfit I wore to keep warm while walking around, but there were so many people everywhere that it was difficult to not be in the way of others. Ricky did manage to get a dimly lit one of me while we were leaving.

I found this coat at a thrift store about a year ago for an amazing price and it has became my staple winter coat. It has huge batwing sleeves so it’s super easy to layer! I was wearing another faux fur coat underneath, and a comfy sweater underneath that, with a maroon scarf, and thick leggings.

I highly suggest checking out Wild Lights at the Columbus Zoo or any similar event your local zoo may have! It was such a lovely date night! Who doesn’t love sipping hot chocolate and looking at pretty lights and cute animals with the one you love? Though, the first time I went with a few friends and that was just as lovely! If you’re planning on going when it’s really cold, I would say that you can never have too many layers! Also, don’t forget your gloves and earmuffs (my mistake!)

Happy New Year: Recap & Resolutions

Happy New Year! The Babes both had a very busy & exciting year in 2014 and they’re looking forward to what 2015 has to offer. Check out what they were up to the past year & what they’re resolving to do in the year to come!

Emily’s New Year’s Eve makeup look!

Emily: So much has happened in the past year that it’s hard to figure out where to start when describing it. I’ve been so busy that it is crazy to look back at all that’s happened. Here are all my favorite parts of 2014:

–  I took my fashion photography to a whole new level by focusing on my use of color. I also started shooting lingerie and boudoir. You can see both here!

– I lost 50lbs!

– I started photographing weddings and shot one at the Newport Aquarium in Cincinnati.

– I started my final year of school. Ever.

– My cousin got married and I celebrated with my family in San Antonio, TX for a few days. It’s one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been to.

– I turned 21! And spent many summer nights at great bars in downtown Columbus.

– I got my own adorable apartment.

– Zeus, my fluffy kitty, came into my life and hasn’t left my side since.

– My boyfriend, Ricky, and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary (we’re coming up on our 2nd now!)

– I became even closer to my best friend, Sarah, when we started this blog!

2014 was stressful, busy, wonderful, and crazy. It definitely had its ups and downs like every other year. I’m so excited for all the equally crazy things that will happen this year in 2015! In a little more than 4 months I’ll graduate from college and turn 22. I’ll hopefully find a job and possibly move somewhere. It’s hard not to stress about my future, but hopefully this time next year I’ll be even more happy with what I’ve acomplished! I typically don’t make New Year’s Resolutions because I try to live my life day-by-day, but there are a few goals I’m setting for myself:

– Commit to my work, this blog, my family, friends, and boyfriend everyday.

– Love myself and take care of myself everyday.

Sarah’s New Year’s Eve Outfit!

Sarah: 2014 was an amazing year! I had so many great experiences with even greater friends. It’s difficult to recap the entire year, but I’ve come up with a list of some of the big events that made 2014 so exciting. In the past year I:

– Had my last, first day of school. Ever.

– Became a student blogger. Read my posts here!

– Started developing my collection for the senior fashion show. View my progress here!

– Interned as a lingerie designer for La Senza.

– Developed & constructed a line of leather goods inspired by Columbus. View the line here!

– Finished my first quilt.

– Participated in Pelotonia and raised over $1,500 for cancer research.

– Celebrated my 22nd birthday!

– Started collecting tea cups. View them on my Instagram!

– Saw Bastille in concert.

– Started this blog, Bad Beauty Babes, with one of my best friends. 🙂

As great as 2014 was, I know that 2015 is going to be even better! In the coming year I will graduate from college, get my first job, and most likely move somewhere new. I can’t wait to see what else 2015 will bring! In 2015 I resolve to:

– Write daily in my journal.

– Commit to this blog.

– Read at least one book each month.

The Babes Take Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, bridge, city, Pennsylvania

One of the many lovely bridges in Pittsburgh.

These babes had the opportunity to visit Pittsburgh for the day and we had an amazing time! The drive from Columbus was just over three hours and we arrived around 10am. We spent the whole day exploring the city with a great friend of ours who was kind enough to give us the grand tour. Pittsburgh is truly a beautiful and inspiring place!

Emily: I’ve never been to Pittsburgh before so it was quite the experience! Driving into the city was gorgeous. Sarah told me before we left that entering the city was really cool because you approach a huge hill and go through a tunnel. You get to the other side and it opens up with this huge, tall city that appears right before your eyes. The city is set up like Cincinnati – a city that I’ve visited many times, but it was so much bigger. The Andy Warhol museum was one of my favorite parts of the trip. I’ve seen a few of his pieces in person but it was amazing seeing some of his work that I’ve only ever seen in my art history text-book. I had no idea how large-scale some of them were! The perfect end to our night was seeing the stunning view of the Pittsburgh skyline and then enjoying a beer and great food from Primanti Brothers with two of my best friends.

Sarah: I had been to Pittsburgh once before while assisting with a Victoria’s Secret store remodel, but this time was much more enjoyable. It was nice to actually be able to explore the city and see what it had to offer. We began our day by eating at Pamela’s. They have, hands down, the best breakfast food I have ever tasted! President Obama must agree because he frequently flies these Pittsburgh chefs to the white house to prepare his own breakfast. How awesome is that?? After breakfast we visited The Andy Warhol Museum. As a pop art lover, it was awesome for me to see some of Warhol’s early work, as well as, some of his most famous pieces. We also had the opportunity to visit the Carnegie Science Center which had an incredible animated, miniature model of the city. I love miniatures so I was really excited about that! After nightfall, we drove up to Washington Point to get a view of the city lights. What a magical way to end an excellent day! I can’t wait to visit Pittsburgh again in the future!
